How to Sand a Deck

Sanding a deck smooths the surface and prepares it for sealing or painting.

Step 1: Prepare the Deck

1. Remove furniture and debris.
2. Clean the deck with a broom or hose.

Step 2: Choose Sandpaper

• Use coarse-grit sandpaper (40–60) for rough areas.
• Use fine-grit sandpaper (80–120) for a smoother finish.

Step 3: Sand the Deck

1. Use a belt sander for large areas.
2. Sand along the grain of the wood to avoid scratches.
3. Sand edges with a detail sander or by hand.

Step 4: Clean the Deck Again

• Remove dust with a vacuum or damp cloth.
